Increase in West Nile virus cases in Greece
According to the latest data from health authorities, our country is facing an upward trend in West Nile virus infection cases during this year's season. The relevant agencies are closely monitoring the development of the situation, as the virus is transmitted primarily through mosquitoes.
As of August 19, 2026, the official toll records thirteen deaths of patients who had contracted the virus and developed serious complications. Experts point out that the number of incidents remains significant, which makes it necessary for citizens to be cautious.
Health authorities recommend taking preventive measures to avoid mosquito bites. Citizens are urged to use approved insect repellents, wear appropriate clothing that covers the body, especially during hours when mosquitoes are most active, and use screens on the windows of their homes.
Furthermore, experts emphasize the importance of removing stagnant water from gardens and balconies, as they are breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Timely information and adherence to protection guidelines are the key tools for limiting the spread of the virus in our country.
