Problems in the National Health System: POEDHN's concern regarding funding

The state of the National Health System (ESY) in Greece is once again at the center of public discourse. The Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Employees (POEDHN) recently expressed deep concern regarding the funding of public hospitals, emphasizing that the system is facing serious financial difficulties.

According to the data presented by the Federation, public health expenditure in Greece amounts to just 5.5% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Employee representatives stress that this percentage is particularly low, especially when compared to data from other European countries that possess more developed and robust health systems.

POEDHN points out that, under current financial conditions, it is extremely difficult for public hospitals to operate properly and offer quality services to citizens. The lack of sufficient resources affects both the daily operation of health units and the working conditions of medical and nursing staff.

The discussion on strengthening the ESY remains critical for Greek society. Health sector stakeholders are calling for an increase in state funding in order to ensure the sustainability of the system and the provision of medical care to all patients in need.
