Concern over West Nile virus in Greece: 232 cases and 19 deaths
Health authorities in Greece are on alert due to the outbreak of the West Nile virus. According to the latest data from the National Public Health Organization (EODY), the number of confirmed cases in the country has reached 232, while 19 deaths have been recorded among patients who had contracted the virus.
The West Nile virus is transmitted primarily through the bite of infected mosquitoes, which breed in stagnant water. Experts point out that the majority of people who are infected do not show symptoms or only exhibit mild symptoms, such as fever and headache. However, in some cases, mainly in the elderly or individuals with weakened immune systems, the disease can cause serious complications to the nervous system.
To protect against the virus, authorities recommend that citizens take specific self-protection measures. It is important to use approved insect repellents, wear clothing that covers the body during hours of mosquito activity, and install screens on doors and windows. It is also suggested to remove stagnant water from gardens and balconies, as this facilitates the breeding of the insects.
Health services are continuing epidemiological surveillance throughout the territory, while spraying is being carried out in high-risk areas. Citizens are urged to stay informed through official EODY announcements and to contact their doctor immediately if they develop worrying symptoms.
