Today's News: Guarantees for agricultural payments and housing protection
In today's newsletter, we focus on the assurances regarding agricultural subsidies and developments in the primary residence protection program for vulnerable citizens. We also cover Greece's new defense agreements and international trade developments affecting the market.
The Vice-President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas, sent a message of support to Greek producers, emphasizing that no farmer will lose the money they are entitled to. This statement was made within the framework of cooperation between Greece and Italy for the reform of the agricultural payment system, with the European Union expressing its confidence in the changes being implemented in the primary sector.
A significant development also occurred regarding the housing issue, as the Ministry of National Economy announced the selection of a provisional contractor for the Real Estate Acquisition and Leaseback Entity. This is a mechanism aimed at vulnerable borrowers: it allows them to transfer ownership of their home to the entity to avoid eviction, remaining in the property as tenants with the right to repurchase it in the future.
In the political arena, the plenary session of Parliament passed two Ministry of Defense bills with a broad majority (ND, SYRIZA, PASOK). The agreements concern the strengthening of Greece's defense cooperation with Romania and Bosnia and Herzegovina, within the framework of the country's strategic presence in the Balkans.
At the international level, the European Parliament approved a trade agreement between the EU and the US to reduce tariffs on a range of products. Tariffs are additional taxes imposed on imported goods, and their reduction is expected to de-escalate trade tensions between the two sides.
Finally, today's news includes a fire that broke out in an agricultural area in Anthili, Phthiotis. The fire does not threaten inhabited areas, and firefighting forces are operating to contain it.
