Significant changes to school canteens in Greece starting in September
From this coming September, school canteens across Greece will enter a new era. The Ministry of Education has announced radical changes aimed at protecting students' health by significantly restricting the unhealthy foods offered within school units.
The new initiative provides for the withdrawal of products with high sugar, salt, and saturated fat content, which are considered harmful to children's development. In their place, canteens will be required to offer options with higher nutritional value, such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole-grain products.
These changes are part of a broader effort to combat childhood obesity and promote healthy eating from a young age. Canteen operators will have to adapt to the new requirements, following strict rules regarding the quality of products sold to students.
This decision has drawn positive reactions from parents and expert nutritionists, who emphasize that the school environment plays a decisive role in shaping children's dietary habits. The implementation of the measure is expected to begin with the start of the new school year, marking a significant shift toward a healthier lifestyle for the new generation.
