Significant changes to school canteens in Greece starting in September
Starting this coming September, school canteens across Greece will enter a new era. The Ministry of Education has announced radical changes aimed at improving students' nutrition and promoting healthier habits within the school environment.
The main change involves the removal of unhealthy foods from canteen shelves. Products with high sugar, fat, and preservative content, which are considered "junk food," will no longer be available for sale to students during breaks.
In place of the aforementioned foods, canteens will offer options with higher nutritional value. The goal is to encourage the consumption of fresh products, such as fruits, vegetables, and snacks prepared in a healthier way, thereby helping children have more energy during their lessons.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to combat childhood obesity and educate young people on the importance of a balanced diet. Canteen operators will be required to adapt to the new rules before the start of the new school year.
With these changes, schools in Greece aim to become spaces that promote not only knowledge but also the health of their students. The success of the measure will depend on the cooperation of suppliers, parents, and the school community.
