Innovation in road construction: Asphalt made from olive pits
A new, eco-friendly technology in road construction is gaining ground in Europe. Researchers and engineers are now developing asphalt that contains residues from olive pits, offering a sustainable solution for transport infrastructure.
This process utilizes waste from olive oil production, which until now was considered useless. By processing them, the pits are transformed into a material that can replace part of the traditional materials used in asphalt, thereby reducing the environmental footprint of road construction projects.
Countries with high olive oil production, such as Spain, have already begun testing this method on various road networks. Initial results show that the new material is durable and can withstand the pressures of daily traffic, while simultaneously promoting the circular economy.
The use of such materials represents a significant step toward the transition to "greener" infrastructure. As the European Union sets stricter targets for emission reductions, the utilization of agricultural by-products for road construction is expected to become a major trend for the future.
