Tragedy in Rethymno: Two firefighters lost their lives battling the flames
A major tragedy has been unfolding over the last few hours in Rethymno, Crete, as an uncontrollable wildfire has caused the death of two seasonal firefighters. The unfortunate men were found unconscious near their vehicle in the Krya Vrysi area while they were attempting to contain the fire front.
The situation in the area remains extremely difficult, as strong winds blowing on the island are significantly hindering the efforts of the firefighting forces. The fire is spreading rapidly, forcing authorities to proceed with preventive evacuations of villages to protect the residents.
Operations to rescue citizens are currently underway, with people being transported to safe locations even by sea, as roads have been closed due to the wildfire. Strong ground and aerial forces are operating at the scene, making every possible effort to bring the fire under control.
Local authorities and Civil Protection are on full alert, calling on citizens to strictly follow the instructions of the relevant agencies. The country mourns the loss of the two firefighters, who gave their lives in the line of duty while trying to protect citizens' property and the natural environment.
