International Overdose Awareness Day: Naloxone has saved hundreds of lives in Greece
On the occasion of International Overdose Awareness Day, which is observed every year on August 31st, attention turns to the prevention of deaths from substance use. In Greece, the availability of naloxone, a medication that can immediately reverse the effects of an overdose, is proving to be crucial for public health.
According to official data, the use of naloxone has saved 768 lives in our country to date. This medication acts as an antidote in cases of opioid overdose, allowing users to breathe again and avoid death until medical help arrives.
Experts emphasize that access to naloxone is essential for the protection of vulnerable groups. In recent years, significant steps have been taken in Greece to make the administration of the medication easier, not only in hospitals but also in harm reduction programs aimed at people who use substances.
International Overdose Awareness Day serves as a reminder that overdose deaths are largely preventable. Educating citizens and the relatives of users on how to use naloxone remains one of the key goals of the relevant health authorities.
The effort to inform and support people facing addiction problems continues. The importance of timely intervention remains the most powerful tool for saving human lives and strengthening social care.
