Increase in West Nile virus cases in Greece
According to the recent weekly report from the National Public Health Organization (EODY), the West Nile virus is seeing an outbreak in our country. As of the morning of August 19, a total of 157 domestic cases have been recorded in various regions of Greece.
The situation is causing concern among health authorities, as the number of fatalities has reached 13. Experts point out that East Attica is one of the areas where the highest frequency of the virus is observed, a fact that requires increased attention from residents.
The West Nile virus is transmitted mainly through the bite of infected mosquitoes. For this reason, authorities recommend the use of insect repellent, covering the body with appropriate clothing during the hours when mosquitoes are most active, as well as the use of window screens.
Furthermore, citizens are urged to avoid stagnant water sources near their homes, as that is where mosquitoes breed. Timely information and the adoption of preventive measures remain the most effective tools for limiting the spread of the virus.
EODY continues to closely monitor the country's epidemiological situation and is expected to issue regular updates. Citizens who experience symptoms, such as high fever or severe headaches, should contact their doctor immediately.
