Fire alert in Greece: The palm forest in Preveli is burning
Greece is on high alert due to the intense wildfires that broke out on Thursday in many regions of the country. Strong winds are hindering the efforts of the firefighting forces, which are battling to contain the flames and protect residential areas.
One of the most serious outbreaks was identified in Crete, where the fire reached the well-known palm forest of Preveli. This forest is one of the island's most important natural treasures, and the news of its destruction has caused great concern among residents and local authorities.
In addition to Crete, fires also broke out on other islands, as well as in parts of mainland Greece. The flames have caused damage to homes and agricultural land, forcing many citizens to abandon their properties for safety reasons.
Authorities remain on alert, as meteorological conditions remain difficult. The Civil Protection agency is appealing to citizens to be particularly careful and to follow the instructions of the competent authorities to avoid new fire outbreaks.
