Turkish Cypriot side negative regarding tripartite meeting on the Cyprus issue
New developments have emerged in the Cyprus issue, as Tufan Erhürman has rejected the proposal by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to hold a joint tripartite meeting. This proposal aimed to restart the dialogue for resolving the problem that has preoccupied the island for decades.
This decision causes concern regarding the diplomatic efforts being made recently. The international community, through the UN, is seeking to bring the two sides to the negotiating table in order to find a mutually acceptable solution for the future of Cyprus.
Mr. Erhürman's stance highlights the difficulties that continue to exist in the talks. Despite António Guterres' efforts to bridge the differences, the positions of the two sides remain far apart, a fact that hinders the progress of the negotiations.
The next moves of the United Nations are awaited with great interest by the Greek and Cypriot governments. The situation remains fluid, while diplomats continue their contacts to determine whether there is room for new initiatives in the near future.
