Request for VAT reduction on veterinary services in Greece
A well-known Greek private equity investor is calling on the government to implement a significant reduction in VAT for veterinary services. Currently, these services are taxed at a rate of 24%, which is considered particularly high for pet owners.
According to the proposal, the current tax rate is unfair, as it treats animal medical care in the same way as luxury goods, such as Rolex watches. The investor argues that animal health is a matter of social responsibility and not a luxury.
The high cost of veterinary visits and medications makes it difficult for many citizens to provide the necessary care for their animals. Reducing VAT could make these services more affordable, while simultaneously encouraging responsible pet ownership.
This discussion is expected to occupy the political agenda in the coming period, as the demand for tax relief on essential services gains traction. It remains to be seen whether the government will consider changing the tax framework for the veterinary sector.
