Greece celebrates the Assumption of the Virgin Mary: Crowds across the country
Greece celebrates the Assumption of the Virgin Mary today, one of the most important religious holidays for the Greek people. It is the day of the Dormition of the Theotokos, which is honored with particular splendor in every corner of the country, while also marking the peak of the summer season.
Thousands of faithful and visitors have flooded the churches and monasteries dedicated to the Virgin Mary. People travel from every region of Greece, as well as from abroad, to pay their respects and participate in the traditional religious events.
At the center of the celebrations is the Church of Panagia Evangelistria in Tinos, where crowds gather every year to honor the grace of the Virgin Mary. At the same time, a large turnout is also recorded at Panagia Soumela on Mount Vermio, a place of particular historical and religious significance for Pontic Hellenism.
Beyond the religious ceremonies, the Assumption is accompanied by local festivals and cultural events. In many villages and islands, residents organize celebrations with traditional music, dances, and local delicacies, strengthening community bonds.
Today serves as an opportunity for spiritual upliftment as well as social gathering. Authorities are on alert to assist the thousands of travelers, as traffic at ports and on highways remains particularly heavy.
