Challenges in the National Health System: Why doctors are leaving the country

The National Health System (ESY) in Greece has been facing a serious crisis in recent years, as it struggles to retain healthcare professionals within its public facilities. Many doctors are choosing to work abroad, seeking better working conditions and higher salaries.

One of the main problems reported by employees is the severe shortage of staff in hospitals. Understaffing leads to exhausting working hours and professional burnout, a fact that makes the work environment particularly difficult for medical and nursing staff.

Furthermore, low wages are a decisive factor in the exodus of scientists. Despite their contribution to society, the earnings of doctors in the public sector are not considered competitive compared to other European countries, which discourages many young doctors from returning to Greece.

This situation also creates problems for the quality of services provided to citizens. The lack of personnel causes delays in appointments and surgical procedures, thereby burdening patients who depend on the public health system.

Resolving these issues represents a major challenge for the state. Improving working conditions and upgrading salaries are considered necessary steps to stem the wave of doctors leaving and to restore confidence in the National Health System.
