Michalis Sallas' intervention on national defense and the economy
Michalis Sallas recently made an important intervention, referring to the "Achilles' Shield" program. The well-known banker emphasized that strengthening national defense is a critical move for the country, which, however, must be examined within a broader context.
According to Mr. Sallas, the "Achilles' Shield" program should not be considered an investment for war. On the contrary, he argues that it is a strategic move for prevention and deterrence, whose main goal is to maintain peace in the wider region.
However, Mr. Sallas expressed strong concern about the relationship between defense spending and economic growth. As he underlined, the purchase of armament systems cannot be effective if it is not accompanied by a strong economic plan, which he called the "Athena Plan."
He warned that focusing exclusively on defense, without simultaneously strengthening the economy, carries risks. In his view, the country should not find itself in a position of investing in weapons while leaving its economy exposed and without the necessary infrastructure for development.
In conclusion, this intervention highlights the need for a balanced approach. National security and economic prosperity are considered by Mr. Sallas as two pillars that must move forward together, in order for Greece to secure its future with stability.
