Increase in West Nile virus cases in Greece
An alarm has been raised among the country's health authorities as a significant increase in West Nile virus cases is being observed. According to official data published, a total of 110 incidents have been recorded in various regions of Greece as of August 12.
Of the total number of people who fell ill, 81 presented symptoms affecting the central nervous system, a fact that makes the situation particularly serious. Experts point out that we are going through one of the most difficult periods in recent years regarding the spread of the virus, which is transmitted primarily through mosquitoes.
Relevant health agencies are issuing a strong recommendation to citizens to take all necessary protective measures. It is important for residents to use approved insect repellents, wear appropriate clothing that covers the body, and install screens on their home windows, especially during hours when mosquitoes are most active.
In addition, authorities are proceeding with intensive spraying in areas with stagnant water, where the reproduction of the insects is favored. Citizens are urged to be particularly careful and to contact their doctor immediately if they develop symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, or confusion.
The situation is being closely monitored by the National Public Health Organization, which continues to record and analyze the data. Timely information and prevention remain the most effective weapons for limiting the spread of the virus in the country.
