Changes to school canteens: An end to unhealthy foods from September
Significant changes are coming to school canteens in Greece starting this coming September. The Ministry of Education's goal is to protect students' health by removing unhealthy foods from school shelves.
Products containing high amounts of sugar, high fat, or large quantities of salt will no longer be permitted to be sold to students. Instead, canteens will be required to offer options with high nutritional value, such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and products that support children's balanced diet.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to combat childhood obesity and cultivate proper dietary habits from a young age. Canteen operators will need to adapt to the new rules by offering products that meet strict quality standards.
Parents and health experts are welcoming this decision, emphasizing that the school environment plays a decisive role in shaping the lifestyle of young people. The implementation of the new measures is expected to begin with the start of the new school year, marking a new era for nutrition in Greek schools.
