Increase in migrant flows by sea in August
There was a significant increase in migrant arrivals in our country during August. According to official data from the Coast Guard, a total of 83 incidents of irregular entry were recorded, with the number of apprehensions reaching 3,391 people.
The most recent incident took place south of Crete, where authorities located and rescued a group of 44 foreign nationals who were on a boat. These individuals were safely transported to a port on the island, where the prescribed identification and registration procedures were followed by the competent services.
Greek authorities remain on alert, strengthening patrols in the Aegean and Ionian Seas to monitor maritime borders. Managing migrant flows remains an ongoing challenge, as smuggling networks continue to use dangerous routes to transport people to Europe.
The situation on the Greek islands is being closely monitored by the Coast Guard, which is cooperating with international organizations to provide humanitarian aid to refugees and migrants. Investigations to identify the smugglers organizing these trips are ongoing, with the aim of combating illegal activity at the maritime borders.
