New law in Ukraine: Russian language loses special protected status
President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, recently signed a new law that significantly changes the position of the Russian language in the country. According to the new legislation, the Russian language will no longer have the status of a "protected language" in Ukraine. This move constitutes a major political decision during a period of great tension.
This decision comes as a direct response to the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. The government in Kyiv considers this change necessary for the protection of national sovereignty and the strengthening of Ukrainian identity. In this way, the country is trying to reduce Russia's influence on social and political life.
It is interesting to note that Volodymyr Zelenskyy himself is a Russian speaker and used the Russian language as his primary language of communication for many years. However, since the start of the war, the President and many other Ukrainian citizens have chosen to speak exclusively Ukrainian in their public appearances, sending a message of unity.
The new law is expected to affect various sectors of daily life, such as education, mass media, and public administration. The authorities' goal is to promote the Ukrainian language as the sole official language of the state, limiting the use of Russian in official documents and public services.
This legislative change represents another step in Ukraine's effort to move away from its past and build a future closer to Europe. Despite the challenges, the country continues to adapt its laws to the new reality shaped by the armed conflicts.
