High alert for wildfires in many regions of Greece
Greece is on high alert as powerful wildfires broke out on Thursday across several islands and regions of the mainland. Strong winds are hindering the efforts of firefighters, who are battling to contain the fire fronts.
One of the most serious outbreaks was identified in Crete, where the fire reached the well-known palm forest of Preveli. The area is an important habitat, and the destruction caused has sparked great concern among residents and authorities.
In addition to the natural environment, the wildfires have caused damage to homes and agricultural land in various parts of the country. Many residents were forced to abandon their properties for safety reasons, while authorities proceeded with the evacuation of settlements where the situation was dangerous.
Civil Protection remains on standby, as weather conditions continue to be difficult. Citizens are urged to be particularly careful and to follow the instructions of the competent authorities to avoid new fire outbreaks.
