New spatial planning for Renewable Energy Sources in Greece

The Ministry of Environment and Energy recently announced the new spatial planning for the installation of Renewable Energy Source (RES) projects in the country. The goal of the new regulation is the better management of the natural environment and the protection of areas with particular ecological value.

According to the new guidelines, strict restrictions are being established on the placement of photovoltaic parks and wind turbines. Specifically, the installation of such systems is now prohibited in protected areas of the Natura 2000 network, as well as in areas classified as high-productivity agricultural land.

Furthermore, the new map sets limits on the development of RES projects near traditional settlements and archaeological sites. In this way, the state seeks to preserve Greece's cultural heritage and landscape, avoiding the excessive concentration of energy infrastructure in sensitive areas.

Investors and energy companies are now called upon to adapt to the new data before submitting their applications. The competent authorities emphasize that the transition to "green" energy must be carried out with respect for the environment and local communities.

The implementation of this planning is expected to clarify the landscape for future investments in the energy sector. The government maintains that the new rules will contribute to achieving national climate change goals, while simultaneously ensuring a balance between development and the protection of nature.
