Severe shortage of psychiatric beds for children and adolescents in Greece
In a recent report, the Ombudsman highlighted a very serious problem concerning public health in our country. According to the data, the number of available psychiatric beds for children and adolescents is extremely limited, causing concern among experts and families.
In total, there are only 69 beds operating throughout the Greek territory for the hospitalization of minors facing mental health problems. This number is considered insufficient to cover the increased needs recorded in the country in recent years.
The situation is particularly difficult in Attica, where the largest population of Greece lives. In this region, there are only 10 beds for adolescents aged 14 to 18. This means that many young patients cannot immediately find the help they need in public hospitals.
Experts point out that the lack of infrastructure significantly hinders the work of doctors, who are often faced with the unpleasant reality of not having a bed available for a child in crisis. This situation requires immediate attention from the competent authorities.
Strengthening mental health structures for young people is now an urgent necessity. The state is called upon to consider ways to increase the number of beds and improve services, so as to ensure the right of children and adolescents to appropriate medical care.
