New rules for digital platform workers in Greece
Significant changes are coming to the Greek labor market, as the European Union establishes new rules for those working through digital platforms. These changes primarily concern food delivery workers and other professionals who use applications to provide their services.
The main change brought about by the new European directive is the creation of a "presumption of employment." This means that, under specific conditions, workers will be considered employees rather than freelancers, thus gaining more rights.
Under this new status, platforms will have to prove that the worker is not under their control or direction if they wish to keep them as an external contractor. Otherwise, the worker will be entitled to full insurance coverage and the benefits provided by labor law.
The goal of the European Union is to protect workers from precariousness and ensure fair working conditions in the digital world. Greece, like other member states, is required to incorporate these regulations into its national law in the coming period.
These changes are expected to affect thousands of workers in the delivery sector in our country. The competent authorities will closely monitor the implementation of the new rules to ensure that companies comply with the new European framework.
