Problems and the need for changes in the new European airport control system

The new European entry and exit system, known as EES (Entry/Exit System), is now in full operation across Europe. Despite its goal of greater border security, the first weeks of its implementation have brought significant challenges to light, especially for countries with high tourist traffic such as Greece.

This system began to be implemented gradually from October 2025 and became fully operational in April 2026. Its purpose is to electronically record travelers from countries outside the European Union, replacing the manual stamping of passports. However, the process appears to be more complex than expected for airports.

Alexander Zinell, CEO of Fraport Greece, recently expressed his strong concern about the situation. According to him, the new system needs a "radical overhaul." Mr. Zinell emphasized that the way the system currently operates causes delays and makes passenger service difficult at Greek airports, creating problems for the smooth flow of travelers.

Fraport Greece manages 14 regional airports in Greece, which welcome millions of tourists every year. For the Greek economy, quick and easy access for visitors is crucial. Border delays can negatively affect the tourist experience and the country's image as an international destination.

Competent authorities and airport officials are now calling for improvements in software and control procedures. The goal is to find a balance between border security and traveler convenience. For now, passengers coming from non-EU countries are advised to be prepared for potential delays upon their arrival.
