New tactile map with Braille at Syntagma Metro station
An important step for the accessibility of people with visual impairments has been taken at the central Syntagma Metro station. A new tactile map has been installed, allowing passengers with vision problems to better orient themselves in the space and use the transport network with greater autonomy.
This map is constructed with special raised surfaces and includes information in Braille. In this way, users can "read" the layout of the station by touch, locate platforms, exits, and passenger service points.
This initiative aims to eliminate the obstacles that people with disabilities face daily in their movements around the city. The use of technology and special design in public spaces is considered essential for creating a society that offers equal opportunities to all citizens.
Relevant authorities announced that the installation of such maps is part of a broader plan for the modernization of Metro stations. The goal is the gradual expansion of these infrastructures to other central stations in Athens, in order to facilitate the movement of thousands of passengers.
This effort has received positive feedback from organizations for people with disabilities, which emphasize the importance of independent living. Improving accessibility to public transport is a priority for upgrading the quality of life in the capital.
