Alert for wildfires in many regions of Greece
Greece is on high alert due to the intense wildfires that broke out on Thursday across several islands and regions of the mainland. Strong winds are hindering the Fire Service's efforts and making the task of extinguishing the fires particularly difficult.
One of the most concerning outbreaks was identified in Crete, where the fire reached the well-known palm forest of Preveli. This forest is a significant natural treasure for the island, causing great concern among residents and local authorities regarding the destruction of the ecosystem.
In addition to the Preveli forest, the flames have caused damage to homes and farmland in various parts of the country. Many residents were forced to abandon their properties for safety reasons, as the speed at which the fire is spreading due to the winds is very high.
Civil Protection forces remain on standby, while authorities are appealing to citizens to be particularly careful. The situation remains critical, and efforts to contain the fire fronts are continuing with the use of ground and aerial assets.
