NCDP calls for protection of primary residences for people with disabilities

The National Confederation of Disabled People (NCDP) has brought the critical issue of protecting the primary residence of people with disabilities and their families back to the forefront. Prompted by the death of Mari Carmen Abascal, a pensioner from Spain who had become a symbol of the fight against evictions, the Confederation emphasizes the need for immediate legislative intervention in Greece.

Mari Carmen Abascal became known throughout Europe for her participation in major protests regarding the housing crisis in Spain. Her story highlighted the difficulties faced by vulnerable social groups when they are confronted with the risk of losing their homes due to financial problems.

In Greece, the NCDP stresses that housing is a fundamental human right. According to the Confederation, people with disabilities and chronic illnesses are often in a disadvantaged financial position, which makes the protection of their primary residence an imperative need for their dignified living.

The organization is calling on the state to immediately legislate measures that will prevent auctions and evictions for these specific categories of citizens. This proposal aims to ensure a safety net so that no citizen with a disability is at risk of ending up on the street.

The issue of housing remains one of the greatest challenges for Greek society. The NCDP calls on the government to take the needs of people with disabilities seriously by proceeding with legislative regulations that will offer permanent and substantial protection.
