Obesity is a serious problem in Greece: High costs for health and the economy
Obesity is now one of the greatest public health challenges in Europe, with its impact being particularly noticeable in our country as well. According to recent data, the problem is linked to 278,000 deaths annually at the European level, while millions of people lose valuable years of healthy life.
The situation in Greece is concerning, as the annual economic cost caused by the disease amounts to 3.4 billion euros. This amount covers both medical care expenses for patients and the loss of productivity in the labor market.
Experts point out that obesity is not just an aesthetic issue, but a serious chronic disease that increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and other serious conditions. Prevention, through proper nutrition and regular physical exercise, is considered the most effective way to address the problem.
Managing obesity now requires a coordinated effort from the state, health agencies, and citizens themselves. Public awareness and the adoption of a healthier lifestyle are essential steps to reduce the social and economic burden of this crisis in our country.
