A vacation in Texas is more expensive than a trip to Greece
Many residents of the Netherlands express their dissatisfaction with the significant rise in vacation prices within the country, with Texel Island being a prominent example. Posts have spread on Facebook comparing the cost of a half-week stay on the island to a week-long trip to Greece, showing that Texel is more expensive. According to NH Nieuws, this comparison is accurate.
In September, the cost of renting a cabin for eight days for four people in Texas is around 1800 euros, while a similar stay in Crete, including flight tickets, costs about 1200 euros. This price difference has raised many questions about why local vacations are equal to or even more expensive than foreign trips.
Tourism expert Joof Loken from Breda University of Applied Sciences explained that direct comparisons can be misleading. Texel Island experiences high demand with limited supply, unlike major tourist destinations like Crete. The island also seeks to maintain its exclusive character, while Greek resorts benefit from bundled holiday packages and low labor costs.
On her part, Rosalie Lab from the tourist information office in Texel pointed out that rising prices are a phenomenon affecting all of the Netherlands, explaining that local business owners are increasingly leaning towards providing luxury accommodations to meet tourists' desires for upscale experiences. While she acknowledged concerns about affordability, she confirmed that Texel still offers a variety of options suitable for different budgets, and they are often fully booked, with a significant improvement in service quality.
Financial pressures may increase next year, as the tax on accommodation in hotels and tourist homes in the Netherlands is set to rise from 9% to 21%. Loken warned that this increase could deprive many residents of spending vacations within the country. Meanwhile, the tourism sector is currently pressuring the government to stop this increase.
