Arrest of a suspect in the Nord Stream explosions in Poland following the events of 2022

Ukrainian citizen Vladimir Sh. was arrested in Poland in connection with the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 pipeline explosions in 2022, which caused significant damage to several sections of the pipelines. The Federal Prosecutor's Office confirmed that the arrest was made under a European arrest warrant. It is noted that Vladimir Sh., a diving instructor, is the second suspect to be arrested in the years-long investigations into these acts of sabotage.

Earlier this year, Italian authorities arrested Serhiy K., a Ukrainian citizen alleged to have led the operations. An Italian court later ordered his extradition to Germany. German authorities are still searching for several other suspects, including five men and at least one woman, although reports indicate that one of the original suspects died last year.

Vladimir Sh. had previously succeeded in escaping arrest after German authorities attempted to detain him in Poland last year. At that time, Polish authorities did not execute the arrest warrant, and Sh. was returned to Ukraine in a vehicle belonging to the military attaché of the Ukrainian embassy in Warsaw. The reasons for his later return to Poland remain unclear.

Investigators have managed to identify all members of the commando group allegedly responsible for the attacks. According to reports, the perpetrators used a rented sailing yacht hired through intermediaries using fake identities from a German company to place explosives on the pipelines. Several pipelines were severely damaged in September 2022. Both Moscow and Western authorities described the explosions as acts of sabotage, although no party has claimed responsibility, and Ukraine denied any involvement.

The arrest represents an important step in the international investigation into the sabotage of critical infrastructure in Europe. German authorities are still pursuing the remaining suspects as part of ongoing efforts to hold those responsible for the attacks accountable and to prevent any future threats to vital energy networks.
