Political crimes reach their highest level ever in Germany

Germany recorded a record number of politically motivated crimes in 2025, reaching 85,837 cases—an increase of 2% compared to the previous year. This marks the highest level since nationwide tracking began in 2001.

According to reports citing data from the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), the number of such crimes has more than doubled since 2015, highlighting a growing and persistent issue across the country.

Far-right groups were responsible for the majority of offenses, with 42,544 cases recorded in 2025. This makes them the largest contributor to politically motivated crime, far surpassing other groups.

The far-left political spectrum accounted for the second-highest number of cases, with 13,490 recorded offenses. Authorities continue to monitor both sides closely as tensions remain high.

Investigators linked the surge in crimes partly to the early federal election held in February 2025, which led to an increase in offenses targeting political opponents. Additionally, international crises, including conflicts in the Middle East, have influenced the situation within Germany.

Police also identified 6,886 cases with foreign ideological motives and 1,983 cases driven by religious reasons. However, in 20,934 instances, authorities were unable to clearly determine the underlying motive behind the crimes.
