Hong Kong Customs Busts Two Drug Trafficking Cases at Airport, Seizing 42 kg of Suspected Drugs

Hong Kong Customs recently conducted operations at Hong Kong International Airport, detecting two major cases of drug trafficking via luggage on two consecutive days. On June 17 and 18, through rigorous risk assessment, customs officers successfully intercepted a large quantity of suspected drugs attempting to be smuggled into Hong Kong.

The first case occurred on June 17. While inspecting the luggage of an arriving passenger, customs officers noticed an unusual structure in the suitcase. Upon further inspection, a large quantity of suspected drugs was found hidden in the false compartments of the suitcase. Customs immediately arrested the passenger involved and launched an investigation.

Following this, on June 18, customs officers detected a second case involving a similar modus operandi. Another arriving passenger had also hidden suspected drugs inside a suitcase in an attempt to evade inspection. A total of approximately 42 kilograms of suspected drugs were seized in these two cases. Customs is currently conducting further investigations into the source and destination of the drugs.

Hong Kong Customs stated that with the resumption of international travel, they will continue to utilize risk management strategies to conduct targeted inspections on passengers from high-risk regions. Customs emphasized that they possess advanced inspection equipment and professional experience, and are confident in combating various cross-border smuggling activities to protect social safety.

Customs reminds the public that trafficking in dangerous drugs is an extremely serious offense in Hong Kong. Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, the maximum penalty upon conviction is life imprisonment and a fine of HK$5 million. Citizens are urged not to participate in drug trafficking activities for financial gain, nor to carry unknown luggage or items for others.
