Yuen Long Rural Sewerage Works Continue to Progress: Government Committed to Improving Environmental Hygiene
The Hong Kong Government recently stated that it is actively implementing the "Rural Sewerage Scheme" in the rural areas of Yuen Long. The primary objective of this scheme is to replace traditional septic tanks with modern sewerage systems, thereby improving local environmental hygiene and river water quality, and enhancing the quality of life for residents.
According to the latest information provided by the Environment and Ecology Bureau, sewerage works in the Yuen Long District have made significant progress. Currently, sewerage system construction has been completed in 48 villages, with works in another 18 villages underway. Furthermore, the government is conducting detailed planning and design for an additional 75 villages, demonstrating its determination to improve rural facilities.
However, constructing sewerage systems in rural areas faces numerous challenges. Due to the remote locations of many villages and their narrow internal roads, construction space is extremely limited. Additionally, the projects often involve the resumption of private land, requiring the government to engage in lengthy communication and coordination with local residents and landowners to ensure the smooth commencement of the works.
To minimize the impact of construction on residents' daily lives, relevant departments will implement various measures during the construction period, such as strengthening noise and dust control. The government emphasized that although rural sewerage works are more complex and time-consuming than urban projects, establishing a comprehensive sewerage network is crucial for safeguarding public health and protecting the natural environment.
Looking ahead, the government stated that it will continue to invest resources and maintain close contact with the Legislative Council and district stakeholders. By continuously optimizing engineering processes and technologies, the government hopes to accelerate progress, allowing more residents in the rural areas of Yuen Long to enjoy a cleaner and more comfortable living environment as soon as possible.
