Correctional officers timely stop suicide attempt by inmate at Stanley Prison

An incident of an attempted suicide by an inmate occurred at Stanley Prison in Hong Kong on May 15. A 35-year-old male inmate attempted to hang himself inside the prison. Fortunately, he was discovered and stopped in time by correctional officers on duty, successfully saving his life.

According to the Correctional Services Department (CSD), the incident occurred at 12:26 a.m. on that day. During a patrol of the cells, a correctional officer found the man attempting suicide by tying a bedsheet to the window bars of his cell. The officer immediately entered the cell to stop him and called for backup to assist at the scene.

The inmate remained conscious when rescued. Correctional officers at the scene immediately performed a preliminary examination and first aid to ensure his vital signs were stable. He was subsequently sent to a public hospital for further examination and treatment. Currently, relevant departments are closely monitoring his physical and mental condition.

It is understood that the man was imprisoned for the offense of "trafficking in a dangerous drug." The CSD stated that they have always been very concerned about the emotional health of inmates and will arrange for a clinical psychologist to provide psychological counseling to the man to help him deal with his emotional issues.

The CSD emphasized that the department takes all feasible measures to prevent inmates from engaging in self-harm. This includes strengthening patrols within prisons and providing necessary medical and psychological support. This incident once again demonstrates the importance of frontline prison staff maintaining a high level of alertness.
