The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health in Hong Kong recently received high recognition from the World Health Organization (WHO). The Microbiology Division of its Public Health Laboratory Services Branch has been officially appointed as a collaborating centre for the "Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System." This appointment symbolizes that Hong Kong's professional standards in public health and infectious disease testing have reached a leading international level.
As a newly established collaborating centre, Hong Kong will undertake the important task of enhancing the quality of global influenza surveillance. This includes providing technical support to other countries and regions, training laboratory professionals, and assisting in the establishment of more comprehensive virus surveillance networks. These efforts are crucial for preventing global influenza pandemics and responding to annual seasonal influenza.
To celebrate this significant appointment, the Department of Health recently hosted two international expert meetings in Hong Kong. Public health experts and scientists from around the world gathered to discuss how to strengthen the global influenza surveillance system. During the meetings, experts shared the latest research findings and explored how to detect emerging viruses more rapidly through international cooperation.
A spokesperson for the Department of Health stated that this WHO appointment is a recognition of the long-term efforts of Hong Kong's public health laboratory services. Hong Kong has always actively participated in international health affairs and maintained a close cooperative relationship with the WHO. This collaboration will further consolidate Hong Kong's role as a regional medical and public health hub, allowing Hong Kong's professional experience to serve the world.
Looking ahead, Hong Kong will continue to leverage its strengths in scientific research and public health to contribute to global epidemic prevention efforts. Through continuous cooperation with the WHO and other international organizations, Hong Kong will not only be able to protect the health of its local citizens more effectively but also play a key role on the international stage, working with countries worldwide to safeguard global human health and safety.
