Lillafüred and Szilvásvárad are Hungarians' favorite narrow-gauge railways
In Hungary, narrow-gauge railways are extremely popular among tourists and families. According to a recent online survey conducted by Csodásmagyarország.hu, it has been revealed which forest railways are the most popular in the country. Based on the results, two well-known routes finished at the top, which domestic travelers consider the most beautiful and interesting.
At the top of the list are the Lillafüred State Forest Railway and the Szilvásvárad State Forest Railway. Both railway lines are located in the Bükk Mountains and attract tens of thousands of visitors annually. These trains transport passengers through beautiful valleys, spectacular bridges, and exciting tunnels into the heart of nature.
The Lillafüred narrow-gauge railway is particularly famous for its picturesque route next to Lake Hámori and the Palace Hotel. Meanwhile, the Szilvásvárad railway takes hikers to the Szalajka Valley, home to one of Hungary's best-known natural attractions, the Veil Waterfall. These locations are popular not only for the scenery but also for the fresh air and peaceful environment.
Although these two railways are the most popular, many other narrow-gauge railways await visitors in Hungary. Examples include the Gemenc, Királyrét, or the Zsuzsi railway in Debrecen. Each line has its own unique atmosphere and plays an important role in promoting domestic tourism and preserving historical heritage.
The autumn season is particularly suitable for a narrow-gauge railway trip, as the colors of the forest are most beautiful at this time. Experts recommend that nature lovers take advantage of the good weather, visit these locations, and discover Hungary's hidden treasures while traveling on the rails.
