Liquidation underway for the Üllő 'larva factory': investors may face significant losses
Liquidation proceedings have been initiated against the Üllő-based Agro-ökológiai Kft., which became known in common parlance as the "larva factory." The company's activities previously drew attention because business circles linked to former President János Áder were also involved in the enterprise.
The company's main profile was the breeding of black soldier fly larvae, which they intended to utilize as animal feed. The project started with high hopes, as sustainable protein production is one of the promising future directions for agriculture. However, the facility struggled more than expected to produce a marketable product, which led to serious financial difficulties.
According to press reports, the investment received significant state subsidies as well as private capital, and the total extent of the loss could reach as much as 10 billion forints. During the liquidation process, the company's assets are now being assessed to determine how much money can be recovered for creditors from the invested sums.
The case has attracted the attention of many, as the project was previously cited as a prime example of environmentally friendly technologies. Current developments highlight that even in the case of innovative agricultural enterprises, the gap between technological implementation and market sales poses a high risk.
Only after the liquidation is concluded will it become clear what the fate of the Üllő facility will be, and what impact this will have on the future of alternative feed production in Hungary. Authorities are investigating the company's past management to clarify the reasons for the significant financial deficit.
