Hungarians' Favorite Narrow-Gauge Railways: Lillafüred and Szilvásvárad Lead the Way
In Hungary, hiking and excursions are becoming increasingly popular among families and tourists. Forest narrow-gauge railways can be found in many parts of the country, offering a special experience for travelers, as they reach places where cars are prohibited. A recent online survey has now revealed which lines are the most popular among Hungarian travelers.
Based on a vote by Csodásmagyarország.hu, the Lillafüred and Szilvásvárad State Forest Railways finished in the top spots. These two routes are extremely popular not only among locals but throughout the entire country. According to visitors' opinions, these railways offer the most beautiful views and the most interesting programs in nature.
The specialty of the Lillafüred narrow-gauge railway is that, starting from Miskolc, it takes passengers deep into the Bükk Mountains. During the journey, the picturesque Lake Hámori, the famous Palace Hotel, and several waterfalls can be seen. This line is one of the most spectacular in Hungary, as it passes through deep valleys, tunnels, and over bridges in the heart of the forest.
The Szilvásvárad railway is also located in the Bükk Mountains and operates in the famous Szalajka Valley. Many choose this destination due to its proximity to the Veil Waterfall and the trout ponds. The narrow-gauge railway helps tourists comfortably reach the upper part of the valley, from where they can explore the area's natural treasures on foot in the fresh air.
Forest railways are not just simple means of transport, but also important tourist attractions that help preserve memories of the past. Based on the popularity list, it is clear that Hungarians continue to greatly enjoy nature-oriented recreation and traditional forms of travel.
