Caution: Scammers attempting to steal data in the name of the Public Prosecutor's Office

The National Cyber Security Institute of the Special Service for National Security (NBSZ NKI) issued an alert in early September regarding a dangerous phishing attack. Unknown criminals are abusing the name of the Public Prosecutor's Office of Hungary to attempt to obtain sensitive data from unsuspecting citizens.

The attackers are sending electronic messages that appear to come from the official address of the prosecutor's office. The emails typically refer to an urgent matter and ask recipients to download an attached file or click on a link. According to experts, the scammers' methods are becoming increasingly sophisticated, making the emails look completely authentic at first glance.

The NBSZ NKI emphasizes that the prosecutor's office never requests confidential data or financial information via email. Cybersecurity experts warn the public to be very cautious with these types of messages. If someone receives a suspicious email, they should under no circumstances open the links contained within or download any files.

If someone has already provided their data or downloaded a suspicious file, it is advisable to change passwords immediately and contact their bank if financial information may have been compromised. Authorities recommend that suspicious messages be reported to the National Cyber Security Institute in all cases, thereby helping to prevent further attacks.
