Summer heatwaves caused significant price increases in the Hungarian electricity market
Significant price increases were experienced in the Hungarian electricity market during the heatwaves in June and July. Due to the extreme heat, electricity prices were more than 100 percent, and in some periods even up to 119 percent, higher than usual.
Because of the heat, energy demand in the country increased drastically as both households and businesses used air conditioning units more intensively. The increased demand placed a serious burden on the electrical grid, which led directly to the rise in prices.
According to experts, the situation was significantly improved by solar power systems in Hungary. During sunny hours, renewable energy sources generated large amounts of electricity, which helped cover the increased consumption and mitigated market tensions.
Although solar panels played an important role in the security of supply, the summer period showed that extreme weather conditions continue to pose a serious challenge to the country's energy supply. In the future, further development of the grid and strengthening flexible energy production may be the most important tasks to manage similar heatwaves.
