Emerald ash borer has appeared in Hungary
Experts have reported worrying news: the emerald ash borer has appeared in Hungary. This invasive insect species, originating from Asia, poses a serious threat to both domestic forests and trees found in parks.
The emerald ash borer is one of the most dangerous pests that attacks ash trees. The insect's larvae feed under the tree's bark, blocking the flow of nutrients and water, which can lead to the death of the tree in a short period of time. Since the species has no natural predators in Europe, it can spread quickly and effectively.
According to experts, protection against the pest is an extremely difficult task. Infected trees are often only noticed when the damage is irreversible. Authorities and forestry services are currently investigating the extent of the spread and are trying to develop an appropriate strategy to prevent further damage.
In order to protect the ash population, public awareness is also important. If someone sees suspicious symptoms on ash trees – such as the drying of the crown or cracking of the bark – it is worth notifying local plant protection experts. Early detection can be crucial in saving trees and slowing the further spread of the pest.
