Transparency issues surrounding the MNB: why are contracts being kept secret?
Questions have once again arisen regarding transparency in the operations of the Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB). The central bank refuses to disclose the details of certain contracts, which has sparked a serious debate in public opinion and the press.
According to critics, the central bank's reasoning is eerily similar to the previous practice used during the presidency of György Matolcsy. At that time, the bank justified withholding data by claiming that the funds used had "lost their public nature" and therefore were not subject to public disclosure.
Under the current presidency of Mihály Varga, the situation is generating similar tensions. Opposition voices and journalists argue that the management of public funds should be transparent in all cases, especially for an institution like the central bank.
According to the MNB's position, some of the contracts are classified as business secrets, which is why they cannot release detailed information about the expenditures. In contrast, human rights advocates believe that the accountability of public spending is a fundamental expectation in a democratic country.
The case continues as the public awaits answers regarding exactly what the central bank spent money on and under what conditions. Experts suggest that greater openness on the part of the institution will be necessary in the future to restore trust.
