Hungarian road transport in severe crisis: revenues continue to decline
The Hungarian road transport sector is facing serious difficulties. According to the latest report from NiT Hungary, the sector's profit crisis deepened further in the second quarter of 2026, posing a major challenge for domestic businesses.
Based on data from the professional organization, the revenues of transport companies are significantly falling short of expectations. The problem is primarily caused by rising operating costs and declining market demand. For many businesses, even maintaining daily operations has become a struggle in the current economic environment.
The situation is further exacerbated by the fluctuation of fuel prices and the labor shortage that has been plaguing the sector for a long time. Carriers are forced to pay higher wages to drivers, while clients are unable or unwilling to pay the increased transport fees.
Industry players believe that urgent measures are needed to maintain competitiveness. Experts suggest that if there is no change in market conditions, many smaller Hungarian transport companies may be forced to suspend their operations or close down for the remainder of the year.
