More than 2,600 billion forints of public money has gone into private equity funds
According to the latest report by Transparency International Hungary, a significant amount of public funds has flowed into private equity funds. Four state-owned companies have committed a total of more than 2,645 billion forints in investments in various funds registered in Hungary and abroad.
The operation of private equity funds is often opaque to the public. Since these funds are not required to report their investments in detail, it is difficult to track exactly what the public funds are being used for. Experts say this practice raises serious questions regarding the management of state assets.
The report highlights that due to the magnitude of the invested amount, greater transparency would be important. Monitoring the use of public funds is a fundamental expectation in every democratic country, especially when it involves such vast sums that are directly or indirectly derived from taxpayers' money.
So far, there has been no detailed government explanation regarding the precise purpose and benefits of the investments. Transparency International Hungary continues to monitor the processes of state asset management and is urging further investigations into the matter so that the public can have a clear view of the background of these financial decisions.
