It is time to plant strawberries: tips for successful gardening
With the arrival of September, the autumn planting season begins in Hungarian gardens. Although many people associate gardening with spring work, experts say that early autumn is one of the most ideal times to plant strawberries. The soil is still warm enough for root development, but the air is cooler, which favors the strengthening of the plants before the onset of winter.
The success of strawberry planting largely depends on choosing the right location. The plant loves sunny, airy places where the soil is rich in nutrients and has good drainage. Before planting, it is worth preparing the soil thoroughly, removing weeds, and, if necessary, improving the soil quality with compost or well-rotted manure.
Maintaining the proper distance between seedlings is also an important consideration. Experts recommend leaving at least 30-40 centimeters between the plants and 60-70 centimeters between the rows. This ensures proper air circulation for the plants, which helps prevent the development of various fungal diseases that often cause problems during the wetter autumn period.
Regular watering in the weeks following planting is essential, especially if the autumn proves to be dry. The roots need time to firmly establish themselves in the soil. According to experts, properly rooted strawberry seedlings withstand winter frosts much better and will start growing more vigorously in the spring of the following year.
Overall, autumn strawberry planting is an excellent investment for next year's harvest. If we do the work carefully now, we can expect an abundant and delicious strawberry harvest in our own garden next season. Gardeners should therefore take advantage of the September days while the soil temperature is still suitable for planting.
