More than 2,600 billion forints of public money moved into private equity funds
According to the latest report by Transparency International Hungary, a significant amount of public funds has flowed into private equity funds. Four state-owned companies have committed a total of more than 2,645 billion forints in investments to various funds registered in Hungary and abroad.
The operation of private equity funds is often opaque to the public. These funds are not required to report in detail on exactly who their owners are or for what purposes they use the invested capital. For this reason, experts say it is difficult to track how public funds are being utilized.
The report highlights that state-owned companies take on significant risks when choosing these types of investment vehicles. According to Transparency International Hungary, due to the lack of transparency, there is a danger that public funds are not serving the country's economic interests in the most efficient way.
In connection with this issue, several economic analysts have emphasized that transparency and accountability are essential when using public funds. However, current regulations allow a significant portion of these investments to remain hidden from voters and taxpayers.
In the future, the debate is expected to continue regarding how stricter rules could be introduced to increase the transparency of state investments. According to the organization, the foundation of trust in the management of public funds is that it should be clear to everyone where state resources are going.
