Sovereignty Protection Office to be Abolished & Tesco News
According to the decision of the National Assembly, the Sovereignty Protection Office will be abolished, while news of Tesco's potential withdrawal is spreading in the retail market. A significant driver shortage in the economy is making transport difficult, but the Mercedes plant in Kecskemét may expand with the production of a new model, and domestic new potatoes have appeared in the markets.
On June 30, the National Assembly voted to abolish the Sovereignty Protection Office. Under the decision, the institution, which was responsible for monitoring foreign influence attempts, will cease its operations.
Customers and employees may be affected by market reports suggesting that Tesco is considering withdrawing from Hungary and the European Union. The retail chain is struggling to keep pace with the expansion of discount chains such as Lidl and Aldi, which could make the future of the entire network in the region uncertain.
In addition to changes in trade, difficulties are also emerging in logistics: according to data from NiT Hungary (the professional organization for hauliers), a shortage of 8,000–10,000 drivers has developed, causing a loss of up to 200 billion forints to the economy annually. This shortage could indirectly lead to price increases for products. In contrast, expansion is expected in the industrial sector, as production of the new, smaller G-Class SUV could begin at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Kecskemét, providing stable job opportunities for those living in the area.
When doing daily shopping, it is worth looking for domestic products, as Hungarian new potatoes are already available in large quantities in markets and stores. The season, which started in mid-June, is reaching its peak these days, so fresh domestic potatoes can be purchased at a more favorable price.
