The number of catering establishments in Hungary has decreased significantly
Significant changes have taken place in the Hungarian catering industry over the past six years. According to the latest data, there are nearly 3,700 fewer restaurants, cafés, and other catering establishments operating nationwide than before. This decline affects every area of the sector and has forced many businesses to close.
According to experts, several economic factors are behind the downturn. In recent years, catering establishments have had to contend with rising energy prices, the increasing cost of raw materials, and labor shortages. These challenges have made profitable operation difficult for many small businesses.
In addition, consumer habits have also changed. Customers have become more cautious with their spending and often prefer eating at home or choosing faster, cheaper options. Due to rising prices, many people dine out less frequently, which directly impacts the revenue of catering establishments.
The situation is particularly noticeable in smaller settlements and rural regions, where there are fewer guests. Although many establishments continue to welcome visitors in tourist centers and large cities, the national statistics clearly show a contraction of the sector.
In the future, catering establishments will need to adapt to the new circumstances in order to survive. Industry representatives believe that increasing efficiency and having a more precise understanding of guest needs can help overcome these difficulties.
