European Commission attaches further conditions to the disbursement of EU funds to Hungary
According to the latest information from the European Commission, Hungary must meet further strict conditions, so-called "super milestones," in order to access funds from the EU's Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). These requirements are of fundamental importance for the release of the grants.
The purpose of the RRF funds is to help member states modernize their economies and recover from the coronavirus pandemic. In the case of Hungary, negotiations have been ongoing for some time with the Brussels-based body, which expects various rule-of-law and economic reforms from the government before the funds are transferred.
The term "super milestones" refers to those high-priority commitments that the European Commission considers essential for the disbursement of funds. These conditions primarily relate to anti-corruption measures, the independence of the judiciary, and transparent public procurement procedures.
Representatives of the Hungarian government are in constant consultation with EU bodies regarding the fulfillment of these conditions. The goal is for the country to receive the support it is entitled to as soon as possible, which plays an important role in sustaining domestic economic growth and implementing development projects.
The conclusion of the process and the opening of the funds still depend on the success of the negotiations. Further details are expected to emerge in the coming months regarding the steps Hungary will take to achieve the set goals and when the EU funds might become available.
